Jessie Wowk Cares for Self, Others and This Place

We're excited to announce that we have decided upon our new school wide common language, which is:

At Jessie Wowk we Care for Self, Care for Others and Care for this Place.

After looking at different social responsible models and common language approaches in learning environments throughout our district, we felt this language best reflects our values and our hopes for our learners. The attachment as part of this page will give you a glimpse into some of our staff's reflections around the common language and how it was decided upon.

Here is a brief description of the common language and what it entails:

Care for Self

We can begin by looking at Care for Self and thinking about how we can create opportunities for our students to learn about the different ways that they can care for themselves and be ready to learn, such as getting plenty of exercise, having a healthy breakfast, limiting screen time, getting an adequate amount of sleep, etc. When we are caring for ourselves our needs are being met and we are more likely ready to learn and be able to Care for Others in our community and Care for the School / Place.

Caring for Others

When we look what it means for all of us to be Caring for Others in our school, we are recognizing the importance of learning about the importance of treating everyone in a manner that allows them to feel safe, included and that they belong here in the Jessie Wowk school community. When we are Caring for Others, we are honouring diversity and celebrating and acknowledging our differences. Everyone is treated with respect and kindness and when we have a problem in a social situation, we are able to solve it in a manner that is appropriate and safe.

Caring for Place

When we are Caring for Place, we are all connected and feeling safe and ready to do our part in learning about how we can look after our environment and our community. For example, we are working together to think of how we can lessen our environmental impact and reduce, reuse and recycle. We can also come together and volunteer our time toward initiatives that strengthen our community such as student leadership, peers helpers, garden club, etc.

We are excited for the road ahead with our Wowk Cares model and for the opportunities our students will be offered around learning about the expectations here at Jessie Wowk and how we can all make contributions toward making this school a safe and caring learning environment.
