Diving Deeper into Data: What stories and wonders emerge?

In September, we looked at the Spring student scanning data to highlight some themes and wonders that emerged, so that our school story continues to be guided by student voice.

Themes that emerged:

  • students are seeking connections and ways to build relationships
  • most students feel a sense of belonging, but only some students can articulate what it means
  • students want opportunities to engage with learning in different ways and in different learning spaces

Wonders and further investigation:

  • What is the relationship between proficiency in learning and a sense of belonging?
  • How are students engaging in their learning, specifically in the area of literacy?

Action: Mini Student Scan

Recognizing that we need to dive deeper into what students have shared, and also noting that only students in Gr. 3 - 7 were a part of the Spring scanning, we engaged in a mini student scan, surveying 2 - 3 randomly selected students from each class. We asked:

  • What does belonging mean to you?
  • How do you know that you belong?
  • How do you like to share your thinking and learning?
  • What are your wishes for the school?

**A sample of the student scan results can be found in the attached images.

This led us to our revised inquiry question: How does a focus on connections help students develop a deeper sense of care and greater engagement in learning?

Next Steps:

  • make caring visible by creating a visual representation to document learning (Wowk Cares Tree)
  • integrating different materials in learning experiences and exploring different learning spaces with students
  • Wowk Cares assembly & shared experiences
  • Cares Clubs Days - opportunities for students to connect with peers and staff from different classes while engaging in project-based learning activities
