Cares Assemblies
In response to student survey data collected in Spring 2024 and Fall 2024, we wanted to create a structure that nurtures shared language and understanding around the Wowk Cares model, while offering opportunities for students to build connections within and between classes.
Action: Wowk Cares Assemblies
- a new thinking routine is shared at the start of each assembly, and students are encouraged to engage with the routine as classes transition into the gym
- Cares "focus' for the term is introduced at the assembly, followed by optional learning experiences/ activities that classes may participate in (with buddy classes)
- one Cares Assembly per term
- 1 - 2 shared learning experiences/activities between each assembly
Care for Self Assembly:
- anchor text: "Ishi" by Akiko Yabuki
- focus: ways to care for self (thinking and feeling), and finding connections between caring for self and caring for others
- shared experience: read aloud of "I Am We" by Susan Verde, followed by collective tree pose
Care for Others Assembly:
- students sat in circle for the assembly (intermediate classes formed an outer circle, while primary classes formed an inner circle)
- focus: ways to care for others (through words and actions)
- shared experience: puzzle heart activity
New Learnings:
As a school, we noticed how gathering in circle can shift the culture and energy of our community. When we can see one another in an assembly or a gathering, we connect in a more human-centred way.
We also noticed that students were more engaged in the assembly/experience. This looked like students showing joint attention, calmer and more regulated bodies, and more active participation.
