Financial Report
- General account $15,442
- Gaming account $10,592
- Gift cards of about $4000 in school safe
- Started to draw down on those, e.g. to use to pay for pizza
- Those gift cards came from 1.5-2 years ago when we had our gift card fundraiser, and bought them before Spring Break before COVID shut things down
- Pretty good deal because we got them at 7% discount
- Now money is coming out and liquidated from assets into cash on hand onto Balance Sheet
- Getting money from Munch a Lunch account to our bank account
- A lot of those money are prepaid pizza money that parents have ordered to Oct-Dec
- Those numbers are inflated because we haven’t paid the pizza shop yet but money taken in as a pre-order
- Also received our gaming grant of $4200 from BC Gaming
- We applied for a grant last year and we just received last week
- That grant goes towards extracurricular that we want to put on, or mural
- We can start planning what else we want to do for the rest of the school year for Spring or towards end of year (Art, Dance, etc.) and start bringing in some artists / programs into the school
Pizza Day
- Had 3 completed pizza days and so far the feedback has been good from teachers, Mr. Daum and parents.
- Everything now is different from before – everything is online, from ordering to being delivered to kids’ desks. Everything is labelled and individually boxed and it was a big change for the school and a lot of good things have come out of it. This wa a huge undertaking.
- Positives from this change is collection of money is electronic without having parents count and physically deposit money to bank.
- Less parents in school
- Don’t need for the kids to be in the gym
- A lot of this might stick even after restrictions have lifted for years to come
- Lot less wasting of pizza, because previously would need to order 3-4 pizzas extra
- Fresh Slice does give a few extra slices in case some kids change their mind on flavours etc.
- Question asked as to whether it is possible to extend cutoff date from Sunday to Monday, because Monday allows the teachers to have a reminder, and it might go a long way to get additional orders
- Alaric to talk to Fresh Slice to see how close we can get it to Wednesday
- Alaric does send out a reminder around noon time on Sunday, and it generates about 30 orders every week after the nudge
Fruit and Milk Program
- Twice now, and most of the time it is at the end of the day
- Delivery time has been delayed by a day so far, so it is tricky to go around
- We cannot control when they can put the product at our school
- As we move forward, hope they are more accurate in their delivery date
- Next one is in November
Spirit Wear
- School Spirit Wear is on sale now on Munch
- Deadline is this Sunday Oct 31
- If any family is interested in purchase, log in to Munch
- Mr. Daum will put that in his Week at a Glance newsletter
Gift Card Fundraiser
- In the past, had gift card fundraiser, which is a way for PAC to collect between 2-5% of gift cards that are purchased by parents or parents for their companies, or gifts that parents want to gift
- Might run with that again after Spirit Wear
- Bring a form to fill out, ranges from gas, to groceries to everyday purchases that you can make, including Fresh Slice (example of how PAC can use gift cards to raise even more money)
- Always have been a success (not sure if COVID if people as more comfortable to go to movies, but gas and groceries won’t go away). Also good for Christmas.
- Before COVID, Alaric had some helpers and parents can drop off their orders. But last year, we couldn’t go into the school and Alaric would be outside the school and collect that way.
Outdoor Ed 2023
- No Outdoor Ed parents here tonight, but was hoping that they can bring up some fundraising proposal, but in the chat group they came up with some ideas, including selling flowers for Christmas or chocolates, or masks that has Jessie Wowk logo (still being sourced as it is coming from Asia).
- Originally wanted the masks to be put together with Wowk wear but the timing didn’t work.
- It is a blue mask with Jessie Wowk logo.
- Alaric will get an update from them this week
- Bonnie (Katie’s Mom in Div 2) is the parent that is heading up Outdoor Ed
Halloween Treats
- This year, the email was sent out before the weekend where we are encouraging kids not to share treats with their friends.
- In lieu of that, PAC has asked for donations and a lot came in.
- PAC will be packing those treats in individually packaged bags and teachers will be handing those out on Friday.
Supervision of Crossing Guards
- In the past, teachers would be the ones doing the supervision and Mr. Daum has asked for parents if possible to help out with supervision of crossing guards
- From PAC’s point of view, we can always allocate parents to help out during morning rush hour (8:30 to 8:45am) and have asked Mr. Gustafson of kids that have signed up to be crossing guards, and would later mesh that kids list together with helping parents
Mr. Daum’s Update
From Mr. Daum: Thank you for being here and taking the time and just being here to support your child and community.
Crossing Guards Supervision
- Thinking about how our schedules have changed, this year, schools were able to pieces of our previous schedules and see what to keep and not
- Continued supervised eating and two lunch breaks
- Still need to have teacher supervised during first break time
- Makes it not possible for teachers to supervise in the morning
- Now just looking to PAC for support for supervision for crossing guards and make sure the kids follow proper safety measures
Halloween
- Thank you for parents who donated candy today for Friday. Make sure we are not sharing food.
- Anyone in the community is welcome to wear a costume but it is not an expectation for Friday.
- Please be mindful to not send any costume weapons and to think about appropriateness for schools.
- We have Kindergartens at school and some costumes can be frightening for them.
- There are lots of plans on that day and Mr. Daum will be taking photos and show through a slideshow.
- Bring a pumpkin with them on Thursday in Divisions 1-7. Divisions 8-9 have already started decorating their pumpkins and it has been a lot of fun.
- Keeping some meaning to the day while following protocols.
Remembrance Day
- There will be no school on Nov 11 for Remembrance Day.
- All schools will be having assembles in Wed between 10 to 11am, and Wowk will have it at 11am and will have a variety of presentations, including a band performance
- We are not able to gather collectively in the gym at this time, just to avoid crowding.
- That being said, we will still do something meaningful to reflect the importance of that day.
- There will be Zoom, and link will be provided to classes and parents.
- The other part that is tricky about this assembly is there are a lot of media being used, including student performances, band performance, and it will be challenging.
- What it may look like, may be a pre-recorded presentation being shown via Zoom, but don’t want it to take away from the importance of that assembly.
- We would like to gather in the moment, but we also want it to be successful.
Student Leadership and Volunteer
- At start of pandemic, hard to have something for student leadership as in the previous year there were cohorts
- This year don’t have cohorts and can gather differently with health and safety protocols in mind
- We have crossing guards, for Grades 5 and up
- Pizza day is an awesome opportunity for students to help deliver pizza to Divisions, and bringing warmers back and collecting boxes
- Opportunity for students to learn how to give back to the community
- Have morning announcers, and assembly MCs
- Later on, we can perhaps start again to capture all the pieces like lunch room monitors and office monitors
Volleyball
- Ties back into Student Leadership
- Mr. Woo and Mr. Angman (Grade 6 and 7 teachers) to have kids play volleyball in the gym
- Thankful for these teachers
- There is skill development and having fun playing against each other
- Are we able to play volleyball against other schools?
- Currently exploring that
- Option is available, but it becomes tricky when it comes to organizing rides
- People have different levels of comfort with that and have different schedules
- Now exploring the option of walking to another school, keeping distance, playing on one side of the gym, keeping doors open
- Basketball will probably look something like that
- Right now cannot have spectators
- Other activities like Maker’s Space Club and Friendship Club
- Teachers taking on what they can manage at this time
- These are all staff-led initiatives and have to be overseen by teachers at all times
- Staff are taking it on with their level of comfort
Health and Safety
- As you all know, the mandatory mask mandate expanded to all the students from K to 12 (before it was Gr 4 to 12).
- Want to express gratitude to all the parents in supporting your children in wearing masks at all times in school
- For some Kindergarten, it will take some time to get used to it
- If your child does lose a mask at school, can go to the office to get one or ask their teacher for one
- Staff work together, and would appreciate the importance of hand washing during all times during the school day
- Think back even pre-COVID, the importance of hand washing to prevent even colds and flus
- Implications is, when children have colds and flus, they have to go for a COVID test, so it can prevent that stress
- Come in from outside, handle materials, before you eat, and after you eat and sing 2 songs of Happy Birthday
- Because of parents keeping kids at home, you are acknowledging the mandatory health declaration every single day
- When it comes to spread of COVID-19, encourage in schools to keep as many doors and windows as much as possible so it creates a cold environment. It is not as comfortable as we would like, but it keeps the children safe.
Previously we have received PAC contact info and sent out
- From PAC point of view, we still would like to send out those PAC emails
- There has been a slight delay this year because those forms were supposed to be sent out have been given to the office and are waiting for the go ahead for those forms to be sent
- Mr. Daum and Nina are working on it – will work on it on Oct 26
- There are some confidentiality info about freedom of release of information
- Just a layer of communication within the school
- We get information from Mr. Daum’s emails as well
- PAC email is just another layer of information to make sure in case you missed all the emails that Mr. Daum sends out
On behalf of PAC, thanked Mr. Daum again for spending evenings with us and the amount of learning that he had to do to just get the wheels running.
Next meeting is scheduled on Nov 29
Meeting adjourned at 7:26pm
Next meeting: Will talk to Mr. Daum about what plans is for winter if we are having any celebrations at all.
